Sacred Music

During the singing of the Hymn to St. Alban, red rose petals, symbolising the miracle of the flowers which grew up where the holy martyr’s blood fell on Holmhurst Hill, gently fall from the ceiling of the Crossing of the Oratory Church over the Major Relics of St. Alban on his Feast Day in 2022.

The Congregations of the Oratory of St Philip Neri have always been recognised as among the outstanding custodians of sacred music. Following the way of St. Philip, the Oratorians believe sacred music is meant to assist those who experience it to raise their hearts and minds to God.

Guided by the principle that only our best is good enough for God, the Cardiff Oratory, too, has always promoted beautiful music for the liturgy.

The Oratory has a fully professional choir of 8 singers that sings at the Solemn Mass for Sundays and feast days, the Choral Clerks. The great liturgies of Christmas, Holy Week and Easter attract packed-out congregations.

There is also an excellent ensemble of voluntary singers who lead worship at the 10:00 English Mass each Sunday, the St. Alban’s Singers.

In the tradition of the British Oratories, our choirs specialise in Catholic sacred music. All our sung Masses incorporate Gregorian chant and sacred polyphony, particularly the great music of the Catholic counter-reformation by composers such as Byrd, Palestrina, Victoria and Lassus.

The following pages give more information about what music is on offer at the Oratory:—
