The current building was completed in 1911 and over the years the interior and exterior has undergone some changes. The Church’s interior, in its current state, is sympathetically decorated which was done by a group of parishioners. The most recent development has been the painting of the consecration candles on the pillars and a puginesque border that goes around the church walls.
High Altar & Sanctuary
A gift Lord Ninian Crichton-Stuart, The High Altar is made from Bath stone and is panelled with green Cippolino marble. Statues of angels flank the tabernacle including Ss Michael and Raphael. There are also four shields depicting elements from the passion of Our Lord. The sanctuary lamp hangs in the centre of sanctuary which contains five smaller candles representing the five wounds of Christ. The choir stalls were saved from a church in Belgium, the wooden stalls contain carvings of Ss Anthony and Francis. The large stained glass window behind the High Altar depicts the martyrdom of St. Alban. There is also two more stained windows on the epistle side of Ss Patrick and John.
Sacred Heart Chapel
The Sacred Heart Chapel is situated on the right hand side of the church. The Statue is raised above the Altar which has a tabernacle donated in memory of Maureen Hawkins. At the base of the Altar is a stone carving of the Last Supper. The step has the inscription “O Divinium Cor Jesu, Tu es Deus omnia nostra, Benedictum Nomen Jesu.” (O Divine Heart of Jesus, Thou are O God are all, Blessed be the name of Jesus.) The walls are stencilled with various symbols such as a the fleur de lis and IHS.
Lady Chapel
The Lady Chapel is situated halfway down the church on the right hand side. The Chapel was refurbished in 2009. The Altar has a depiction of the annunciation on the base with the inscription, “Ave Maria, Gratia Plena” (Hail Mary, Full of Grace). There are six stained glass windows which feature titles given to Our Lady in the Litany of Loreto.
Chantry Chapel
The Chantry Chapel is situated on the left hand side of the Church. The original Altar was taken away in the 1970’s which was originally dedicated to St. Thérèse of Lisieux. In 2020, the Altar was put back and was rededicated to Our Lady of Perpetual help.
Baptistery
The Baptistery is situated at the back of the church. This vibrantly coloured chapel houses the Divine Mercy image, and the words, “Jesus, I trust in You” in various languages around the walls. In the dome are paintings of Our Lord, Our Lady of Perpetual Help, St. Joseph with the infant Lord, the symbols of the four evangelists and a pelican in her piety.
The Pietà
The pietà is situated on the left hand side of the church. The Statue depicts Our Lady holding Our Lord after the crucifixion. In front of the statue are the recent Requiem Mass booklets. The parish dead list is also located here and the cenotaph to remember those who have died in conflict.
